It is with great surprise, gratitude and emotion that I have received last week, in London, the John Maddox Prize for my work on the topic of Vitamin C injections in Quebec.

The John Maddox Prize is a joint initiative of the British charity Sense about Science and the scientific journal Nature, and « recognises the work of individuals who promote science and evidence, advancing the public discussion around difficult topics despite challenges or hostility« .

Two prized were awarded this year; I was awarded the one for an early career scientist. Some of my professional role models have won it in the past, so I am deeply honored and moved. I pledge to humbly use this award as an opportunity to encourage more people and scientists to defend science publicly.

Nominations for the prize have to be submitted by individuals within the general public. In my case, it came from Marilou Gougeon, a citizen with an incurable type of cancer, who is committed to the defense of patients’ rights for science-based treatments. I was skeptical (😏) when she told me about it, but I was also touched (even though I never thought I would win!). The fact that one of my readers did all of this for me has a special place in my heart.

Here’s a brief reminder of the events:

In 2018-2019, a petition seeking the approval and reimbursement of Vitamin C injections for cancer patients collected more than 120,000 signatures. After having published an article on the topic, and after having questioned a related political move, I had been the target of a cyberbullying campaign that lasted for months, until I spoke out publicly in February 2019. The petition was ultimately rejected by the National Assembly of Quebec and government working groups were created to prevent such incidents in the future. So, in the end, there were more positive than negative outcomes!

I want to emphasize that I always respect individual choices. What motivated me to get involved to this extent is the fact that the petition was becoming a political and social issue, whereas these types of questions should be assessed on the basis of scientific evidence.

Ce prix est remis par l’OSBL britannique Sense About Science et par la revue scientifique Nature, et vise à « reconnaître le travail d’individus qui font la promotion de la science et des preuves scientifiques, faisant progresser la discussion publique autour de sujets difficiles, malgré les défis ou l’hostilité ».

Deux prix ont été remis cette année; on m’a décerné celui pour un scientifique en début de carrière. Des gens que j’admire et qui m’inspirent l’ont reçu par le passé, donc j’en suis profondément honoré et ému. Je m’engage à utiliser humblement ce prix comme une opportunité afin d’encourager davantage de gens et de scientifiques à défendre la science sur la place publique.

Point particulier : ce sont des gens du public qui doivent soumettre des candidatures et convaincre le jury. Dans mon cas, c’est Marilou Gougeon, citoyenne atteinte d’un cancer incurable et qui est engagée dans la défense des droits des patients pour des traitements appuyés scientifiquement, qui a décidé de me nominer. J’étais sceptique (😏) quand elle me l’a annoncé, mais j’étais touché par sa démarche (même si je ne pensais jamais gagner !). Le fait qu’une lectrice du Pharmachien ait entrepris tout ça pour moi est donc doublement spécial.

Bref rappel des événements :

Après avoir publié un article sur le sujet, et après avoir questionné la démarche politique d’un député caquiste en ce sens, j’avais été la cible d’une campagne de cyberintimidation qui avait duré pendant des mois, jusqu’à ce que j’en parle publiquement en février 2019. Au final, la pétition n’a pas été retenue par l’Assemblée Nationale du Québec, et des groupes de travail gouvernementaux ont été créés pour tenter de prévenir ce type d’incidents. Bref, en bout de ligne, il y aura eu plus de positif que de négatif !

Je tiens à souligner que je respecte toujours les choix individuels de chacun. Ce qui m’a motivé à m’impliquer à ce point, c’est le fait que la pétition devienne un enjeu politique et populaire, alors que ces questions devraient être étudiées sous l’angle scientifique.

J’aimerais faire des remerciements, car tout ça n’aurait jamais été possible sans…

Marilou, je te suis infiniment reconnaissant, et j’espère que des gens auront la chance d’entendre non seulement ton histoire, mais aussi tes réflexions sur l’importance de développer son esprit critique en matière de santé !

Je ne serais JAMAIS passé à travers tout ça sans votre soutien… Et grâce à vous, je me sens réénergisé et plus motivé plus que jamais à continuer ! 🙂
